Steve - I agree the tension is a big part of this...and I think workers need to understand and think about their role in it all.  They often complain and blame the company and I&#039;m not always sure that is fair.  There will be a follow-up post coming this week with more on the tension issue.</description>

To me it is not only about the idea of employees dipping into their own pockets to &#039;buy&#039; a little more flexibility, it also cuts to the core of the &#039;time&#039; issue.  That is, in an increasingly mobile world, and one that (hopefully) is getting more flexible, when does company time start and stop? Since the modern mobile devices are so powerful, in theory many of us never &#039;leave&#039; the office, in fact we carry it wherever we go, and maybe even put it on the nightstand.  Managing the tension that can get created by this will become more and more important for organizations and employees.</description>

		<description>I feel like if the employee starts making concessions with pay or benefits to their employer, it&#039;s a slippery slope. Imagine the concept of taking a pay cut for increased location independence and suddenly your employer wants you working even MORE hours? It&#039;s really an absurd paradigm. I think if you&#039;re working a salaried full time job and you&#039;re good at what you do, you&#039;ll wind up working a lot of hours pretty regularly, turning out a product and satisfying the basic needs of your job, if not more. There&#039;s no need to take a pay cut just so that you can work outside of your office.</description>
