My Husband…a Working Mother?

December 4th, 2008 | by Leanne

For some reason a new magazine has started coming to my husband – Working Mother. We have no idea why it has shown up on our doorstep, and while I find the recipient to be an odd choice, I find the magazine interesting and helpful.  As I’m new to the need for workplace flexibility, I tend to view everything in this space as brand new.   It’s a new problem for me, so therefore it’s a new problem and I need to set about solving it for all.

Of course that’s not true.   This issue has been around for many years and people have been working on improving it for just as many years.  The November issue of Working Mother highlights 22 companies that have been making workplace flexibility a priority for the past 15 years or longer.    There are specific examples of how these companies have helped employees with telecommuting, flextime, tuition reimbursement, parental leave, and more.

For those of you in the HR sphere, check out the amount of time each employee has spent at their company then ask yourself how many employees your company has that are as loyal.  And if you need some help convincing the higher ups that flexibility is good for business check out this Wake Forest University School of Medicine study and show them how much money can be saved in sick time costs and lost productivity.

I’m not sure how much longer my husband will be a working mother but for now we both are learning new things.
